When I get a soccer ball in front of the box, it always feels like time slows down until I make a decision: dribble, pass, shoot, or do something else?
Even though it still feels similar as I make that decision in that moment today, it’s no longer the same as it used to be. I’m 37 now, the blink of an eye that I spend thinking is too slow, and gives my opponents enough time to take the ball.
High-performance athletes across tennis, Formula 1, or soccer all lament that reaction times fall away in their late 30s and early 40s. There is all this talk about longevity, much of it focused on superficial things. I’m worried that decision-making becoming just a bit slower has negative ripple effects on everything else. But, I also just wanna play as fast as I used to. Is anybody researching how to get back closer to decision-making in real time?
